Discover the Inn
A treasure from the first golden age of travel in North America
The Bailey House is at the heart of the historic centre of Annapolis Royal, the oldest permanent European settlement in Canada. The French settled this beautiful piece of Earth in 1605 and there has been continuous activity since. As early as the 1630s, the Governor of Acadia and Seigneur of Port Royal had a manor in the vicinity of our English Garden. The current Bailey House was built on this estate in 1770 and had we our first royal guest in 1794. Around 1832, we opened as an inn. The house is a treasure of Georgian colonial architecture in North America as the house has thrived for over 250 years in a virtually pristine state, with no alternations or additions.
A Slice of Heaven
When you visit, we think you will agree with Verrazzano during his 1524 voyage of exploration when he named this part of the world Arcadia or “idyllic place”. Annapolis Royal is surrounded on all sides by water and breathtaking vistas. The Bailey House is the oldest accommodation in Atlantic Canada and the only one in Annapolis Royal on the waterfront.
Meet your Hosts
Rod and Julie took over over the stewardship of the Bailey House in 2024. It was a big decision as the Bailey House has been an icon of Annapolis Royal since 1832 when it was transformed into an inn by the renowned “Marm” Bailey.
